A Guide to Fence Panels & Choosing the Right Products

When it comes to choosing the right garden fencing, the myriad of options available can sometimes be confusing. There are many factors to consider, not only for design and style, but also durability and maintenance.

At AWBS we offer fencing solutions for every project and budget – from cheap fencing panels and post and rail fencing, to decorative varieties, like wicket fencing and trellis fence panels. Here we look at the various choices and offer some tips for finding the one that’s right for you.

Wooden fence panels in a variety of styles

Panel fencingLap are the cheapest kind of fence panels and an ideal solution for a cost-effective garden-to-garden divide. Board fence panels are stronger, but slightly more expensive. Their sturdiness makes them a perfect barrier between a garden and public footpath, as well as for households with children and pets.

Our range of panel fencing includes heavy-duty lap and board panels from Tafs, and with every one you buy from the Tafs fencing range, we’ll give you a free three-inch fence post.

The Elite fencing collection from Grange includes some delightful contemporary offerings. Grange is our main supplier of decorative fencing, with a wonderful collection including curved and straight trellis tops, in a variety of designs, all of which are pressure treated.

Wicket fencing – For decorative picket fences, this is simple, natural and effective. Available with a pointed or round top, and with a matching gate, these picket fence panels offer a stylish and clean finish to any project and are ideal around ponds, vegetable patches or children’s play areas.

Feather edge component fencing – This type of fencing is also known as arris, closeboard or slatted fencing. This is a great way to tailor your fence, as the components offer varying height and length options, so can be adjusted to meet exact requirements, and also allow for differing ground levels.

Trellis fencing – We offer many options, from heavy duty square trellis, which is perfect for dividing a garden without obstructing light and views, to decorative diamond or lattice styles. Small trellis panels can be fixed to walls to support climbing plants, and infill panels can be used to enhance the look of standard panel fencing, while still maintaining security.

Five tips for choosing wooden fence panels

  1. For lightweight fencing, such as Lap, three-inch fence posts are fine. For heavier fencing, gardens used by active children and pets and high-wind protection, use four-inch posts.
  2. By bolting posts to concrete spurs they are less prone to rotting and easier to change if damaged by the weather.
  3. For a super strong fence, use full concrete fence posts. This will make replacing damaged panels far cheaper and easier.
  4. Panels with a solid bottom section and a trellis upper are perfect for allowing light into a garden, while still offering privacy.
  5. For gardens in areas susceptible to high winds, open-design fence panels or heavy duty trellis panels are the best option.

As well as an extensive selection of budget and premium garden fencing, we also offer a comprehensive range of treated wooden gates and all the products you need to complete your fencing project, such as fence posts, post mix and arris rails all of which can be delivered to you free of charge in Wiltshire and Oxfordshire.
