Protect Your Property with State-of-the-art Fernco Floodbags
Cases of flooding have risen across the UK in the last decade, damaging homes and businesses along the way. In fact, our local area of Oxfordshire has been affected on multiple occasions during this time. And unfortunately, research suggests that winters will likely become wetter as time goes on, and summer showers will be heavier too.
With that in mind, flood defences are being implemented to divert water away from the most at-risk areas. However, if you live in a postcode that is prone to flooding, it’s still worth having your own protective measures on hand. This is where Fernco Floodbags come in...
A new addition to our drainage range, they can be used to create a reliable, mess-free flood barrier as needed. Learn how they work and the benefits they offer versus sandbags below.
Introducing Fernco Floodbags
Designed by flood prevention specialists Fernco, these innovative flood bags are made with eco-friendly water absorbent polymer gel. When saturated, the gel expands and moulds to any adjacent bags to create a sturdy watertight flood barrier. Better yet, they come pre-filled to speed up deployment and are more uniform in shape than sandbags to make construction easier. However, their most useful feature is arguably how conveniently they are packaged…
Bulky sandbags are typically delivered on a pallet and can prove difficult to store when not in use. Meanwhile, Fernco Floodbags are much lighter and easier to transport since they come vacuum-packed. As a result, they are virtually flat, so take up a minimal amount of room. This makes it’s easy to stockpile enough to create a flood defence ahead of time. Ideal if you’ve been caught off guard before or you lack storage space!
Where can flood bags be used?
Just like sandbags, Fernco Floodbags are designed to stop floodwater from entering domestic and commercial buildings. They can be used indoors or out and are predominantly placed over doorway thresholds and at the base of garage doors. When in position, each bag will absorb around 20L of water, with the rest being diverting away from the property. Plus, they can be used to seal off vulnerable airbricks and household drains, and for absorbing spillages.
Creating a flood barrier with Fernco Floodbags
In the event of a burst river or heavy rainfall that poses a threat to your property, flood bags are quick to set up. Simply remove them from their packaging and submerge each one in water for 5 minutes. This will activate the gel inside and cause it to expand, ready for stacking.
To build your flood protection barrier, all you need to do is lay the bags alongside one another with another row on top. Just make sure you offset the upper row so that the joins below are covered to prevent leaks. In fact, you can stack multiple layers of flood bags to achieve the desired height depending on water levels. (For reference, 5 bags covers 8.5ft of floor space and each layer can hold back up to 18cm of water).
According to manufacturer guidelines, your Fernco flood barrier can then remain in situ for up to three months without degrading. This makes them much more effective when you’re facing recurrent flooding episodes, compared to sandbags. They’re also more environmentally friendly, as the contents won’t escape, unlike loose sand which often gets washed into drains.
Then, once you’ve finished with them, you can simply toss them in your domestic waste bin – no specialist disposal required!
