How do you fix sleepers together?
When fixing railway sleepers together, traditional methods involve using long, hardwearing timber screws to fasten the joints together. While these do effectively secure wood joints, the downside is that you’ll be able to see them once your feature is complete. So if you’d prefer a cleaner, more streamlined look with no hardware on show, you’ll need to find another option.
You may also have to install vertical wooden support beams along stacked rows of sleepers to prevent leaning. Especially if they’re to be filled with soil or gravel. However, these are prone to rot in the long term. As such, our solid steel railway sleeper brackets are a great alternative.
At AWBS, we now stock 7 innovative products from the Perry SleeperSecure hardware range. This includes robust metal sleeper fixings for securing single and double height rows of timber from the inside. Plus sturdy corner brackets for angled joints and flat support plates for extra stability across one or more joints as needed. None of which can be seen externally.
We also supply support spikes, aka sleeper stakes, to keep your timber structure in position without the need for cement. Sound good? Let’s take a look at each product in more detail…
What sleeper fixings and brackets do AWBS sell?
Railway sleeper brackets & stakes
Looking to secure a run of sleepers together and to the ground at the same time? Then Perry’s sleeper support spikes featuring either single or double row height brackets are ideal.
Made from 2mm thick steel in two colours, these durable sleeper fixings boast a shear-angled anchor spike. This can be easily driven into any type of ground and notches in the design ensure they remain firmly in place. Better still, you won’t have to worry about the supports deteriorating like wooden stakes, as the steel won’t be weakened by ground moisture.
The upper bracket with pre-drilled holes can then be screwed onto the adjoining sleepers. This will connect the timber pieces to each other and the ground in one go to minimise the steps involved. Choose from straight supports or L-shaped corner brackets to fix single or double rows of sleepers at a right angle. You can also add more rows on top using support plates.
Tip: use a mallet to gently tamp the stakes into the ground before securing them to the timber with screws. And remember, the deeper you get them, the more stable your structure will be.
Timber sleeper fixing plates
Creating a wooden planter that you want to be able to move around with relative ease? Then our structural support plates – without the stake – will subtly bolster up the structure without rooting it to the spot. Likewise, if you’re making a feature wall or raised bed out of stacked railways sleepers, these internal brackets provide an easy way to connect each level. You can also use them in conjunction with Perry steel support spikes to attach the base to the ground.
We offer straight support plates in two lengths – perfect for connecting 2-4 sleepers together. These can be used to discreetly secure pathway edging, planters and retaining walls that need extra reinforcement. And we also stock corner support plates to strengthen 90° joins too.
Tip: creating an interlocking design by overlapping your timber sleepers at the corners will also produce a sturdier finish. This is key when building large planters, outdoor furniture and more.
Concrete base anchors
If using sleepers to make garden steps, you’ll need to set them into the ground with concrete to prevent movement when you walk on them. The same goes for tall walls, especially those that will be back-filled with soil to split a sloped garden into two levels. And any structures that require the sleepers to be positioned vertically, rather than laid horizontally, such as pergolas.
In these cases, a concrete base anchor is the perfect solution. Simply attach the pre-drilled right-angle bracket to the sleeper, then push the knurled base spike into the cement – like you would a fence post. Once set, your timber feature will be fixed in place whatever the weather.
Hex head sleeper fixing screws
Even if you’re using brackets for joining sleepers, you’ll still need some reliable screws to connect them to the timber. And we’d strongly recommend Carpenter’s Mate Pro Hex Head Screws for the task. These specially designed sleeper fixing screws are made from heavy duty carbon steel. And they also have a rust-resistant coating for long-term durability in all seasons.
Browse four different screw lengths (90-240mm) to suit your needs, each with a useful hex head. This ensures a tight grip whether you’re driving the screws in with a ratchet, spanner or adjustable wrench. It also means you don’t need any special tools on hand and they’re easy to loosen if you need to make alterations. Great if this is your first railway sleeper garden project!
