With Core Edge metal lawn edging, you can easily create clean, defined borders between your garden’s pathways, flower beds and grassed areas. This will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your outdoor space – it also comes with several practical benefits too. Read on to learn more about this innovative border edging and why you might want to install it in your own garden.
What is the purpose of lawn and border edging?
As mentioned, the primary function of border edging is to separate different sections of your garden, such as lawns, gravel walkways and planted borders. It is an easy way to add structure to your space and create a neat finish for a well-maintained look. Maintenance tasks are also easier with edging in place, as you’ll have a clear line to follow when trimming. And you’ll have a barrier in place to protect plants and flowers if using a lawnmower nearby.
Additionally, metal lawn edging helps to prevent grass and weeds from encroaching into other areas. Likewise, it works to keep mulch, soil and gravel in place, so that they don’t spill out of their zone – especially in wet and windy weather. And if you’re worried about slugs and snails destroying your flower beds or vegetable patch, there’s a solution for that too! Raised garden border edging can be installed to limit access and provide a handy deterrent.
Which material is best for garden border edging?
There are multiple factors to consider when choosing border edging, from the look you want to achieve to budget and longevity. Bear in mind that edging products are exposed to the elements, so the material should be durable enough to withstand wind, rain and exposure to the sun. Due to this, robust metal lawn edging such as Core Edge, is highly popular.
Modern steel edging is the most cost-effective option and it’s also quick and easy to install. Better yet, it’s flexible and can be easily bent into shape to match the contours of your garden. And, depending on how you want to use it, there are different heights available to suit. Think discreet low-profile metal lawn edging through to taller raised bed side panels in various shades. However, some people prefer the look of stone or timber garden borders...
Stone borders are a classic choice for more established properties, with smooth, scalloped, riven and even braided designs available. As well as being attractive, edging stones offer a number of advantages, including long-term durability and the ability to suppress weeds. But they’re more time-consuming to install and comparatively expensive in terms of upfront cost.
Alternatively, more affordable timber edging, such as log-roll borders, offer a rustic finish that will complement a range of garden styles. Particularly if you have fencing or decking areas in a similar stain colour. The downside, of course, is that wood is prone to rot over time in moist conditions. As such, it doesn’t last a long and requires more upkeep, such as regular sealing.
Introducing Core Edge steel lawn edging
If metal border edging sounds like the best option for you, look no further. Our new Core Edge collection includes something for every eventuality.
Made by CORE LP with over 40 years of landscaping experience under their belts, these top-quality steel border products are built to last. Thanks to their scratch-resistant powder coated finish, Core Edge metal border edging won’t flake or rust over time. On top of that, each piece has reinforced diamond ground spikes for stability, even in tough soil conditions. And a dual-lock mechanism promises secure joints and a sturdy border across its full length.
Despite being able to withstand knocks and scrapes, the steel is surprisingly flexible. As a result, it can be shaped around curved edges as needed with little effort. And it can also be scored then bent at an angle to accommodate corners. Additionally, we can supply pre-rolled tree rings to create perfect circular enclosures around trees or shrubs you want to highlight.
Core Edge metal border edging comes in 5m packs as standard, in a choice of heights – 65, 100 or 150mm. The shortest is ideal for path borders and lawns, as the edging should be flush with the soil to prevent trips hazards and avoid mower blades. Meanwhile, the taller options are ideal for flower beds, veg patches and other areas where you want to retain soil or mulch. Or you can use them screen the edge of decking and patios for a tidier finish.

FAQs
What metal garden edging colours are available?
Choose from several neutral UV resistant colour options, including anthracite grey, black and brown. Or opt for unique Corten for something a little different. The rust-like appearance develops over time with exposure to the elements to create a weathered (yet stable) finish.
Are Core Edge borders easy to install?
Yes! All you need to do is trim your edges, loosen the soil with a spade, then tamp the metal lawn edging into place. The easiest way to do this is using a wooden block and mallet. That way, you’ll have a wider surface area to work with and won’t accidentally bend the steel out of shape (or mark it) by hitting it directly. Start by tapping one end into the ground first, then connect the next edging piece, before tapping the full length into place.
NB: the diamond stakes should break through hard ground easily, while securing the edging in place. However, if you find that the soil is too loose, you can also purchase extension pins.
How long does Core Edge metal lawn edging last?
Provided it is installed correctly, Core Edge border edging can last anywhere from 15-20 years or more. And whilst not quite as robust as stone or concrete alternatives, it is much cheaper, simpler to install and more subtle. The steel is also treated to prevent rust and of course, it isn’t subject to rot like with timber options. As such, we think it’s a great all-rounder!
