Introducing the Addagrip brand
Haven’t come across Addagrip before? This experienced UK based resin surface specialist has over 40 years’ experience in the industry. And not just as suppliers – they actually formulate and manufacture their own resin driveway and path mixes. Plus more advanced resin surface materials for heavily used commercial spaces upon request. Better yet, for extra peace of mind, each resin formula is performance tested for durability and longevity. Hence why Addagrip are able to provide such lengthy guarantees, as you’ll discover a bit later on.
What’s the difference between resin bound and resin bonded gravel?
You’ll find a range of products under the Addagrip brand, including both resin bound and resin bonded gravel for domestic applications. Whilst these sound similar, they actually have some notable differences. Resin bonded driveways are created by pouring in resin, then covering it with fine gravel which adheres as it sets. Meanwhile, resin bound surfaces involve mixing resin with gravel to fully coat it, then spreading it across a base. Once dry, the gravel sticks together to create a stable decorative surface, whilst leaving small gaps to allow water runoff.
The benefits of resin bound driveways and paths
Porous and SUDs compliant
One key advantage of resin bound driveways is their compliance with Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDs) regulations. Introduced in 2008, these guidelines require any driveway or other hard-surface around your home over 5m2 to be permeable. In other words, rainwater must be able to pass through to the ground beneath to prevent overflowing drains. Addagrip’s porous resin bound gravel does just this, so you won’t have to worry about pooling water or flooding. However, if you select concrete or asphalt, you’ll need planning permission.
NB: if laying resin gravel over an old base, a survey will be needed to check its permeability.
No loose aggregate
Additionally, you won’t have to worry about stones scattering when you walk or drive over the surface as it is sealed. Not only does this ensure a neat and tidy finish, but it also offers other advantages. Namely, the surface is stable and slip-resistant, so accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs as it won’t move under the wheels. There’s also no risk of loose stones ending up on a nearby lawn and later damaging your mower. Or getting stuck in your car tyre tread!
Durable and low maintenance
Unlike loose gravel that requires regular raking and topping up, resin bound driveways require very little maintenance. In fact, once the set, these hardwearing surfaces can last upwards of a decade! What’s more, the resin coating provides a barrier against moss, algae and oil stains from parked vehicles. Weeds won’t be able to grow up through the bound gravel either, making resin bound driveways much easier to maintain than block paving. And to clean the surface, all you need to do is sweep it regularly and power wash it occasionally – simple!
Quick to install (by the pros)
If you’re hoping for a driveway upgrade with minimal disruption, then resin gravel could be the way to go. The mixture can be applied over existing surfaces, minimising the amount of digging and construction noise involved in many cases. Alternatively, you can opt to have it laid over a simple aggregate MOT Type 3 base. This is ideal for garden paths and as the depth required is minimal, it can be smoothed over tree roots near the surface too.
Once applied, your professionally mixed resin will set quickly in the right conditions. As such, you should be able to walk on it in as little as 24 hours, and park your car after day two. The only real downside is that you’ll need to enlist the help of a trained contractor with specialist machinery to ensure a smooth, robust finish. Need advice? Feel free to contact our team.
Addagrip resin bound gravel now available at AWBS
Ready to explore your options? Two of Addagrip’s bestselling resin bound gravel products have just landed at AWBS – Terrabase Rustic and Stonebound. Each design is permeable and intended for domestic driveways that see light traffic, plus pedestrian walkways such as garden paths. And there are various resin driveway colours to choose from within both ranges, ranging from classic browns to modern greys. Let’s take a closer look…
Terrabase Rustic
A popular choice for resin pathways, Terrabase Rustic is well suited to more established properties. Its larger 10mm stones are available in 18 traditional shades, each offering an authentic gravel appearance without any loose aggregates. As such, this rustic option is also suitable for driveways, courtyards and woodland walkways. In fact, it features in several RHS Gardens! Better still, no invasive groundworks are needed in order to install Terrabase Rustic. It can be laid over many surfaces, including tree roots near the surface for a more even finish.
Stonebound
Alternatively, if you’d prefer a smoother driveway surface, the more contemporary Stonebound resin gravel utilises finer gravel particles. Due to this, it is ideal for wheelchair users and suitable for paths, balconies and around outdoor pools too. You can also expect great slip resistance in all weathers, despite its smoother finish. Not to mention impressive resistance to frost damage when temperatures drop. If that sounds good to you, you’ll have 14 shades to choose from or you can mix several to create something unique. Either way, the finished design will be guaranteed for up to 15 years – depending on surface use.
